The discussion on the basis of trust and relationships of trust in modern societies, which has been established for about thirty years now and continues to intensify, on the one hand, and the analyses of social ideas about the future and future scenarios of social life, on the other hand, have hardly had any points of contact with each other so far. Thus, they leave the constitutive connection between relationships of trust and ideas about the future under-examined and untapped, both analytically and diagnostically, in a historical and systematic perspective.
Under the topic „Vertrauen und Zukunftsvorstellungen“, the planned Research Network is linked to central social discussions of the present day, which focus in a variety of ways on the highly charged issues of interpreting trust as an individual and social resource as well as ideas about the future as the leading currency of forms of action and patterns of interpretation that are considered sustainable in the respective present. The planned Research Groups will for the first time systematically link the two strands of discussion and thus make both future opportunities and fears of the future in their structuring potential for the development and erosion of trust relationships the subject of historical and contemporary investigations. In this way, established notions of the connection between modernity and openness to the future will be examined critically.
